W.A.S.P.’s Blackie Lawless reacted to Nicko McBrain’s departure from Iron Maiden.

The frontman shared a message for the drummer on his website. He wrote, “Nicko McBrain… A great warrior just left his drum throne live for the last time. Very few in the history of percussion have left such a distinctive mark as this man. His accolades, his rewards and trophy’s have been too numerous to count. But the thing I felt when I heard last night would be his last live show all but sent me into a tail spin. Yes he’s admired the world over, but for me he’s my friend, and I say without reservation whatsoever… I love this man.”

“Having been part of the same management family as Maiden for the last 40 years I can tell you first hand, Maiden is Rock’s answer to the mafia… once you’re in, you never leave… you are family FOREVER. They are unmatched in class with a fierce dedication to one another. He is beyond Blessed still, and all in our family say, Godspeed young man,” Lawless added.

On December 7, Nicko McBrain announced his decision to retire from extensive touring after 42 years. In a statement shared on Iron Maiden’s official X account, McBrain confirmed that his final performance with the band would take place that night in São Paulo, Brazil.

Since his announcement and final show, many in the music community have sent their heartfelt messages. Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy posted on social media: “Shocked to hear the announcement of Nicko McBrain’s retirement from touring with Iron Maiden. I wish my friend all the best in his retirement… thanks for all the years of music and friendship, you’re the best Nicko!”

Jeff Scott Soto also shared his thoughts on McBrain’s retirement in a separate post. “When Clive Burr exited Maiden, I was bummed as he had a unique take on Maiden’s music…when I 1st heard Nicko on ‘Piece Of Mind,’ I was convinced the band were in great hands going into the future! Thank you Nicko for your contributions and loyalty…and a hell of a nice guy to boot! Up The Irons to you sir.”

The band recently announced their new drummer, Simon Dawson. Dawson joined the band during the creation of Steve Harris’ 2012 solo album ‘British Lion,’ played on three tracks of the album, and performed as a band member on their 2020 album, ‘The Burning.’

He will join Iron Maiden for their 2025 Run For Your Lives tour, starting in Budapest, Hungary on May 27.
