Tool’s Maynard James Keenan Shares Advice For Young Musicians

If you’re an aspiring musician trying to make it in the rock scene and looking for any advice you might get, well, you’re in luck then; because Tool’s Maynard James Keenan has some advice for you. And even if you’re not a young rocker looking for musical guidance, this recent chat the frontman had with Loudwire might interest you.

It is safe to say that Keenan is not one to take things too seriously, or at least this approach is apparent in his love for absurd humor while making music with A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. So, it only made sense for the frontman not to be all too serious about giving advice and make it a bit comical.

“Well, I’m 58 and wouldn’t have a clue,” said Maynard as he was asked for some piece of advice to share with young rockers trying to make it in the music scene. “Whatever the climate is nowadays and whatever the venues are, whatever the outlets are of what people are responding to, I couldn’t tell you.”

Even though Maynard James Keenan did not have much to say or guide any young musician, he still pointed out the importance of embracing your identity as a storyteller and taking an honest approach. MJK concluded, “I guess the best advice would just be to tell your story as accurately and in as individual of a way as you can.”

So even if the Tool frontman didn’t have much to say about giving advice, he still noted that new artists should embrace their own stories rather than telling others. When this question was asked about sharing a bit of guidance, most rockers might have said, ‘do this’ or ‘do that,’ but Keenan had a more honest approach as the rocker stated he didn’t know what to say. So, his take might be a piece of advice itself.
