Jack Osbourne recently shared insights about his father Ozzy Osbourne’s relationship with Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi. He revealed a candid moment from the band’s farewell tour in an interview on The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan.

The younger Osbourne discussed the unique dynamic between his father and Iommi. He particularly highlighted an incident during soundcheck at their farewell show.

“There was always an interesting dynamic between my dad and Tony and [I’m] not revealing anything that people don’t know,” Jack Osbourne said. “He was soundchecking, so he wasn’t going out there with his A-game on. He was just making sure everything worked and ran through the set. Tony said, ‘Hey you’re singing kind of flat.'”

Jack went on to explain his perspective on this exchange and its significance.

“My mom was like, ‘Oh you know dad…’ And I was like, ‘No I think it’s a good thing because out of the 40, whatever thousand people at that stadium, the only person that could ever say to my dad, ‘Hey, do better,’ was Tony and I think everyone needs someone like that,” he continued.

This candid moment between the Black Sabbath bandmates reflects a relationship that has evolved significantly over the decades. It transformed from early tensions to mutual respect and support.

The bond between Osbourne and Iommi wasn’t always as supportive as Jack described. Louder Sound reported that Ozzy Osbourne revealed he and Tony Iommi used to be “arch-enemies.” Their complicated history dates back even further than their musical partnership. Far Out Magazine noted that Iommi had bullied Osbourne during their school days. This created a foundation of tension that would carry into their early professional relationship.

Despite their rocky past, the two musicians have reconciled and developed a strong friendship in recent years. Louder Sound documented that Osbourne stated since undergoing surgery, Iommi “has been so supportive” and they “text each other” regularly. This demonstrates the depth of their current friendship.

Their renewed collaboration extends beyond personal support into their musical work. Following their 2022 Commonwealth Games reunion performance, Ultimate Classic Rock confirmed that Iommi appeared on two songs—”Degradation Rules” and “No Escape From Now”—on Osbourne’s 2022 solo album Patient Number 9. This marked a significant milestone in their rekindled partnership.

This evolution from “arch-enemies” to supportive friends provides crucial context for Jack Osbourne’s observations about the farewell tour moment. It highlights how Iommi’s constructive criticism represents not just professional honesty, but the trust and care that has developed between these two rock legends over their long careers together.
