Iommi shared news of Gillan’s hospitalization in a message meant to offer support. However, the wording of his initial post alarmed many followers, who misunderstood the opening and thought Gillan had died. Iommi then edited the post to clarify.

Iommi’s first version read: “I’m so sad to hear the news of my dear friend Ian Gillan – after being taken into the hospital for an emergency treatment. Thinking of you Ian and wishing you a speedy recovery.”

He then revised it and shared: “I’d like to wish a speedy recovery to my dear friend Ian Gillan – after the sad news of being taken into the hospital for an emergency treatment. Thinking of you Ian. Tony”

Fans reacted with relief once they understood Gillan was alive. One wrote: “Tony you scared the hell out of me I thought he died after the whole hospital thing.” Another added: “Almost had a heart attack after reading the first sentence. Praying he’s alright and well.”

Iommi’s edited post was intended to update fans about his bandmate’s hospital stay. The confusion showed how quickly social media comments can spread worry among devoted followers.

Gillan was hospitalized during Deep Purple’s fall UK and European tour after a medical emergency. In a statement posted to the band’s social accounts, Gillan explained: “Thank you for all the good wishes and support over the last few days, it means the world. I had a medical problem whilst in Leipzig which required urgent attention at the hospital.” The band postponed two concerts in Germany and later postponed the rest of its UK and European tour under doctor’s orders.

Returning to performing too soon carries serious risks for Gillan as he continues to recover. Deep Purple had released their new studio album SPLAT! on July 3, 2026, and the world tour was set to run through late December with dates across Europe, the United Kingdom, South America and Mexico. The hospitalization forced the band to halt the tour schedule as Gillan recovers.

Gillan’s health challenges have been mounting in recent months. In November 2025, he revealed that his eyesight had deteriorated to the point that he could see only around 30 percent of what he once could, though he said he had adapted to the impairment. His current hospitalization comes weeks after Glenn Hughes, the former Deep Purple bassist and vocalist, underwent 10-hour open-heart surgery and announced his retirement from touring and live performances.
