Being called a ‘national treasure’ in the music scene can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s a huge compliment – it’s for sure. But on the other hand, it’s a lot of pressure to live up to. People expect you to be the next Beethoven or Madonna and constantly pump out hit after hit. It can feel like you’re stuck on a never-ending hamster wheel, with no room to experiment or evolve. And let’s not forget the mental toll it can take trying to keep up with everyone’s sky-high expectations.

But here’s the thing, there’s no official ceremony that makes you a ‘national treasure.’ It’s just a term thrown around by fans, critics, and other musicians, and of course, the skills you need to do that are pretty subjective too. Apparently, for Tom Morello, a Led Zeppelin riff could get you that title. During his performance at Belasco Theater in L.A., Jack White brought the house down with his crushing Zeppelin riffs, and Morello was quick to praise it.

National treasure Jack White rocked the Belasco Theater to the ground last night in L.A.,” Morello wrote in his recent Instagram post. “One part crushing Zeppelin riffs and untethered improvisation, one part Prince-like fearless band commander, one part soft hearted sweet singing Willie Nelson, and one part angry honey badger poked with a sharp stick. White’s playing and performance were completely unpredictable, untamable, wild, and awesome. What’s your fave Jack joint?”

Hold on a second; let’s go on a search to find other national treasures in the music world. Along the way, we’ll be doing a good deed by bringing attention to some of the most accomplished and influential musicians who may not have received the recognition they deserve. When it comes to the title of ‘national treasure’ in the music industry, there are few who fit the bill as perfectly as Jack White. However, there is one other artist who deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as him: Dolly Parton.

So, who gave her this title? Don Henley from the Eagles… In a 2016 interview with Taste of Country, he referred to Dolly Parton as a ‘national treasure.’ Henley praised her for being one of the last truly authentic country music singers and her expressive voice. The musician also stated Parton had so much in her voice, reflecting her region of America, her suffering, hardship, love, and compassion. According to Henley, Dolly had many colors, textures, and meanings in her vocals.
