Japanese rock musician Yoshiki has revealed that Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose was in New York preparing for a very different project, clearing the air on Rose’s previous mysterious photo from the studio. According to Yoshiki, the Guns N’ Roses singer had agreed to join him as one of his special surprise guests at the 2026 Global Citizen Festival in New York City, as reported on Instagram.
“Axl Rose from Guns N’ Roses was one of my special surprise guests for Global Citizen in New York’s Central Park,” Yoshiki revealed in a new Instagram post. “Axl and I were going to perform ‘Red Swan’ (English ver), and we rehearsed together in New York.”
That revelation changes the context surrounding the studio photo considerably. Rather than confirming that Rose was recording new Guns N’ Roses material, the image appears to have been connected to preparations for his planned collaboration with Yoshiki.
The performance would have brought the two rock icons together onstage for Yoshiki’s scheduled appearance at the festival. The event, however, never took place.
The 2026 Global Citizen Festival was scheduled for September 26 at Central Park’s Great Lawn, but organizers canceled the event because of dangerous weather conditions expected in New York City. Global Citizen said the decision was made in consultation with New York City and NYC Parks after forecasts predicted conditions that would make it unsafe to bring tens of thousands of fans, artists, crew members and equipment onto the site.
The cancellation marked the first time in the festival’s 14-year history that the event had been called off.
For Yoshiki, the cancellation was particularly disappointing because of the special performance he had been preparing with Rose.
“I’m heartbroken that the festival was canceled, especially knowing that my fans were planning to come from around the world to support me,” Yoshiki wrote. “Through all of this, Axl’s kindness has helped me through. I’m grateful for warmth and support. Hope we’ll have another opportunity to rock together soon.”
The comments also reveal that Rose’s mysterious New York studio appearance was connected to a collaboration that fans had no idea was happening. The planned performance of “Red Swan” would have been a rare opportunity to see the Guns N’ Roses frontman perform alongside Yoshiki, making the canceled appearance an especially intriguing what-if for rock fans.
At the same time, the revelation does not erase the larger Guns N’ Roses album speculation surrounding Rose.
As previously reported, the studio photo appeared at a time when the band has already been giving fans reasons to believe that new material is slowly taking shape. Slash has previously confirmed that Guns N’ Roses have been working on new music, describing the next record as “coming around the bend.” The band also released “Nothin’” and “Atlas” in December, giving fans their first new Guns N’ Roses music since 2023.
That broader activity is why Rose’s studio appearance immediately attracted so much attention. The latest explanation, however, makes clear that this particular session had a different purpose.
For now, Guns N’ Roses fans still have no confirmation that the studio photo represented another step toward the band’s next album. What they do know is that Rose was in New York rehearsing for an unexpected collaboration that could have produced one of the festival’s most talked-about moments.
And with Yoshiki already expressing hope that he and Rose will get another opportunity to “rock together,” the canceled performance may not necessarily be the end of that story.
