Former Journey singer Jeff Scott Soto fronted the band between 2006 and 2007, replacing Steve Augeri. He took to social media to express his gratitude after being invited on stage during a recent Journey concert featuring current singer Arnel Pineda. Soto shared his reaction in a post on Instagram, detailing the moment and thanking Neal Schon and the band for their hospitality during what is rumored to be the current lineup’s final tour.
The post explains how Arnel Pineda spotted Soto in the crowd during the show and invited him to the stage, giving him a shout-out in front of the audience.
“And there it is, the money shot captured by my bro Iron Mike Savoia last night at the Journey show!” Jeff Scott Soto said. “Neal’s missus walked me to the middle of the stage floor, Arnel saw I was there singing along and extended the mic to me then gave me a shout out to the enthusiastic LA crowd…it’s wonderful to be embraced by these guys in this way.”
Soto also reflected on the overall concert experience and his connection with the band and staff.
“Thank you to Neal and Michaele for the hospitality at last night’s Journey show, 28 songs and packed with deep cuts, it was the great sendoff if indeed this is the end for this lineup,” he continued. “I got to say hi to all and felt very welcome by the band and staff!!”
Soto’s brief stint with Journey came at a pivotal moment for the band. His connection to the group’s history adds context to the warmth of this recent reunion on stage.
Soto stepped in as Journey’s lead singer in 2006 after Steve Augeri’s voice gave out following years of relentless touring. Singing “Faithfully” and “Open Arms” night after night without much rest had taken a toll on Augeri’s vocal cords. With a co-headlining tour alongside Def Leppard on the horizon, the band needed someone to fill the role quickly. Soto took over for what turned out to be a short but memorable run before the band moved on.
Arnel Pineda’s own path to the Journey stage began in a very different way. Neal Schon discovered Pineda on YouTube. The Filipino-American singer has held down lead vocal duties for the band ever since, becoming the group’s definitive frontman starting in 2007.
The current tour marks a significant chapter in Journey’s long career. The Final Frontier Tour, billed as the band’s farewell run, kicked off on February 28 at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The trek is set to close out on November 28 at San Francisco’s Chase Center, bringing the tour full circle back to the band’s hometown.
