We are here today to uncover a mystery: the mystery of an unspoken rivalry. Even in one of the greatest bands in history, the bandmates can sometimes have an unspoken competition with each other. Though these rivalries can lead to big conflicts in some groups, some bands like Queen always manage to keep it friendly.

The definitely ‘non-hostile’ rivalry between Brian May and Freddie Mercury was not a public feud but rather a subtle and unspoken one. The two were known for pushing each other to be their best and create their most significant works. This competition ultimately led to some of the most iconic and beloved songs in the history of rock music.

Queen is known for its iconic songs, many of which were created thanks to the genius of Brian May and Freddie Mercury. In addition to his ability to create memorable guitar riffs and solos, May also has a knack for writing powerful and anthemic songs that resonate with audiences. On the other hand, Freddie was a master of storytelling and had a remarkable ability to create characters and scenarios through his lyrics. Although these two were known for their unique collaborations, there were some stories about the unspoken rivalry between them. One of those stories was actually revealed by Mercury himself.

Diehard Queen fans would believe me when I say there was a friendly competition between Freddie and Brian, even though it was never mentioned publicly. During an interview with Capital Radio, Freddie mentioned that one of Queen’s hit songs, ‘Tie Your Mother Down,’ was written by May as a response to Mercury’s ‘Death On Two Legs.’

When asked about the unusual title, Mercury said, “This one is a track written by Brian actually; I dunno why.” He then claimed that Brian May wrote the song to outdo him following the release of ‘Death on Two Legs.’ “I think he was sort of … one of his vicious moods. I think he’s trying to outdo me after ‘Death On Two Legs,’ actually.”

Now, before you start thinking that there was some rivalry between the two bandmates, it’s important to remember that this was a common practice within the band. Each member would often write their own songs and always push each other to do better. So, in this case, Brian May was trying to write a song that was even better than “Death On Two Legs,” which was written by Freddie Mercury.

And, to be honest, he might have succeeded. ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ is a classic rock anthem that is still played on the radio today. The guitar riff alone is enough to get anyone pumped up, and the lyrics are just as powerful. The song was released as a single in 1977 and peaked at number 31 on the UK Singles Chart.

So, while it may have started as a friendly competition between bandmates, ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ has stood the test of time as a genuinely great song. And, whether or not Brian May was trying to outdo Freddie Mercury, he definitely succeeded in creating a classic that rock fans will love for years to come.
