The Reason Why Freddie Mercury Changed His Birth Name ‘Farrokh Bulsara’
Queen singer Freddie Mercury’s story of deciding to change his name and the band’s name is fascinating to read for any rock listeners. There are different reasons which were uttered by the fans, his bandmates, Mercury himself behind his decision to be known as Freddie Mercury, and The Smile’s becoming Queen.
Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar on September 5, 1946. His Parsi-Indian parents named him Farrokh Bulsara. While he was studying in India, he started to use Freddie as his name. As we know, being a rock star was the greatest passion and dream of his life. His dreams came true, which changed his life when he founded the legendary rock band Queen with Brian May and Roger Taylor.
According to Queen lead guitarist Brian May, Freddie decided to change his surname to Mercury after he wrote ‘My Fairy King,’ which belonged to Queen’s self-titled debut studio album. Also, according to some astrologists, he was destined to take this surname because Mercury is the ruler of his Sun at his birth chart.
Why Did Freddie Mercury Choose The Name Of Queen?
Before the lyrics inspired him, ‘Mother Mercury, look what they’ve done to me’ and wanted to be known as Freddie Mercury, he had also found the new name of his band, Queen. When he met Brian May and Roger Taylor, who were Smile members back then, he convinced them to form a new band to try new techniques and stage performances.
Here’s what he said about his decision:
“Years ago, I thought up the name ‘Queen’… It’s just a name, but it’s very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid… It’s a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potentials and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one face of it.”
Therefore, despite his bandmates’ disagreements and different connotations of the name, he was persistent name their brand new band, Queen, because Freddie Mercury thought that Queen was a very effective and amazing name and suitable for their styles and dreams.
