The Go-Go’s Belinda Carlisle Explains Her Only Regret About David Bowie

3 Min Read

Former Go-Go Belinda Carlisle recently had a conversation with Spin and reflected on her memories from the 80s, when The Go-Go was on the rise. The singer mentioned famous artists and bands The Go-Go’s opened up for like Cher, Green Day,  The Police, and David Bowie. About the ‘Serious Moonlight Tour’ which took place in 1983, Belinda said.

“The Bowie tour was a blur because we were all just out of our minds. It was the ‘Serious Moonlight Tour’ and we said we would have to call ours the ‘Serious Barbecue Tour’ because it was all through Texas. They wouldn’t let us do that. They probably thought we were making fun of them. But we weren’t making fun of them. All of us idolized Bowie.”

Carlisle also opened up about how everything was perfect except for one thing, and she regrets that deeply:

“We had a great time. Everything was perfect. I wouldn’t condone drug use, but even the drugs I don’t regret. Not at all. The only regret is never getting to meet David Bowie. I was too out of my mind to meet him. It was in Anaheim and there was an all-nighter the night before the show. I didn’t get to meet him, but everybody else in the band did. Bowie was one of those artists that was so influential for me and my bandmates. Whenever I see old interviews of him, he’s so witty and so smart, I can fucking kick myself for being so fucked up that I never got to meet him.”

The Go-Go’s is one of those bands whose fame grows almost instantly. In a separate interview, Carlisle said:

“I’m so proud of what we achieved, against all odds. From not knowing how to plug in a guitar into amplifier, to three years later being the biggest band in America — I mean, that’s not normal!”

Despite the growth in their fame, the group’s life was short and they disbanded in 1985, only seven years later. About the abrupt end of The Go-Go’s, Belinda said:

“It’s a pretty tough decision to make, but I do think it’s possible for bands to go on too long and lose their dignity. Everybody has their own things going on in their lives, and yeah, I mean — most of us felt like it was time.”

Belinda Carlisle is still on ‘Decades Tour’ for her new EP ‘Kismet.’ You can check the concert dates here and listen to the full album below.
