Nirvana producer Butch Vig recently spoke to Scott Lipps and revealed the hardest thing for the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins in working with Dave Grohl.

Vig started his words by explaining the impact of Hawkins’ passing on Grohl:

“Taylor was an incredible drummer. He is so sorely missed by the Foos fans but by everyone who knew him. He was a great father. He was Dave’s best friend. They were like brothers joined at the hip, and it’s just a loss that probably Dave’s never really going to recover from in some ways, but he’s moving on. He wants to make music, and I think he has to make music in order to be Dave Grohl.”

Recalling his studio days with the late musician and the challenge Taylor faced when he was with Grohl, the producer continued:

“Taylor brought this incredible energy to the Foos that was so vibrant. In the studio, it was so much fun because just of the back-and-forth banter between the band, particularly between Taylor and Dave. There’s some self-deprecation going on, not thinking they’re too full of themselves.

I mean, Dave’s an incredible drummer, too. That was the hardest thing for Taylor, I think. ‘My boss is possibly better than me on drums.’ Dave can play everything better, the guitar, the bass, whatever. He’s that guy. He’s so effing good.”

As Butch Vig explained in his interview, Dave Grohl is determined to continue producing music, although he still mourns the loss of his friend. The band’s first album since Hawkins’s death, ‘But Here We Are,’ arrived on June 2. In the absence of Taylor, Grohl recorded all the drum parts himself. The record is dedicated to honoring the legacy of the late Foo Fighters member.
