Talking Heads’ David Byrne And Lenny Kravitz Represent Rock Music During Oscars

Lenny Kravitz and David Byrne represented rock music with their stance at the Academy Awards Ceremony and performed for this year’s program. Talking Heads‘ vocalist was among the nominees for the ‘Best Original Song’ category with ‘This Is a Life.’

David Byrne co-wrote the song with Ryan Lott and Mitski for the film ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ which won several categories it was nominated for, such as Best Original Screenplay (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) and Best Picture. Although he couldn’t win the category prize for Best Original Song, Byrne impressed the audience with his live performance with Stephanie Hsu and made a reference to the movie by wearing wobbly hotdog fingers on stage.

Byrne and Hsu wore all white, along with their dancers, who backed them with a choreography featuring wild fight moves. In addition to Byrne’s fingers, the dance show gave off the unsettling and bizarre vibe of the movie the two worked for.

While the Oscars – or any other awards ceremony in that regard –  are not typically associated with rock music, as evidenced by the mainly pop music performances in its history from singers like Celine Dion, Adele or Madonna, they made room for a second rock singer at this year’s awards ceremony by having Lenny Kravitz perform on stage. Kravitz sang ‘Calling All Angels,’ a track from his 2004 album ‘Baptism,’ for the In Memoriam segment and was introduced to the audience by John Travolta.

His delivery of a poignant rendition of the song was accompanied by a slide show of photos of famous names who recently passed away, such as Olivia Newton-John. The performance impacted the audience and brought tears to people’s eyes.

While it is not a usual sight to see rock performers on stage for ceremonies like Academy Awards despite their involvement with the film industry with movies like ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ it sure is pleasing to see them represent the genre. David Byrne and Lenny Kravitz impressed everyone with their live shows at last night’s ceremony, creating a positive image for their styles.
