Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley Recalls The Hate He Received Due To Avril Lavigne Relationship

Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 shared his experience of his relationship with Avril Lavigne in a recent GQ interview. He recalled hate from fans due to Lavigne’s pop star status. Pointing out that in the 2000s it was not welcomed for pop and rock artists to go on tour together, Whibley said they could not go on tour with Lavigne and could spend very little time. He said:

“At our own shows, people would bring ‘Avril Sucks’ signs, They would tell me to my face how shit Avril’s music was and how lame it was that I was with a pop star. Music genres were so sacred back then. Nowadays, you can like Metallica and Taylor Swift. But back then, we couldn’t tour together or even play the same festivals, which meant we’d sometimes only get two days at home together between dates.”

Whibley also addressed the pressure of the media surrounding her relationship with Avril Lavigne, noting the difference in media attention in Canada and the US. He said:

“I was a teen in the Toronto suburbs at the time, and the news was covered by the national media with all the breathless glee of a royal wedding. It felt like the Canadian press just wanted a famous couple, and we happened to come along. No magazines were picking up photos of us in the US, but they were everywhere here [in Canada]. Our moms would call us and be like, ‘Oh, I saw you were out at such-and-such place,’ and we didn’t even know there had been paparazzi there. Living in LA, nobody gave a shit.”

Lavigne And Whibley Remained Friends After Their Divorce

Lavigne and Whibley had been married for three years when they announced their divorce in 2009. In a MySpace post in 2009, Avril announced that she and Deryck had parted ways on friendly terms. She stated:

“He is the most amazing person I know and I love him with all my heart. Deryck and I are separating and moving forward on a positive note.”

Whibley also shared a message on Sum 41’s MySpace page. He stated:

“The past 6 and a half years have been the most amazing years of my life. It’s sad it has come to an end, but Avril and I are still family and moving forward in the most positive way possible. Our decision to part ways is amicable, and she holds a special place in my heart and forever will be a great and amazing friend. Thanks to all our family, friends, and fans for all the support.”

Despite their divorce, the couple remained friends and continued to work together

Whibley Was On Lavigne’s ‘Goodbye Lullaby’

The co-producer of Avril Lavigne’s first album after their divorce in 2009, ‘Goodbye Lullaby,’ was none other than Deryck Whibley. Lavigne had only positive things to say about her ex while speaking to Rolling Stone in 2011. She said:

“Deryck is the most talented person I know. He produced, mixed, played guitar and bass. I wouldn’t say it’s a breakup record. It’s about life. I went into it with a mindset of not trying to write hits. People will make assumptions, but they’d be surprised what certain songs are about.”
