Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley On Replacing Chester Bennington, ‘It’s An Impossible Task’

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley recently joined The Jasta Show for an interview. During the conversation, Whibley stated that being Chester Bennington‘s replacement in Linkin Park is a ‘non-possibility.’

In 2018, Mike Shinoda joined Sum 41 on the stage at the Reading & Leeds festival. Together, they performed a cover of Linkin Park’s ‘Faint,’ and this collaboration was well-received by the fans. During the new episode of The Jasta Show, the host Jamey Jasta recalled this performance.

Jasta then remembered how well-received this performance was and told Deryck Whibley that his voice would fit in Linkin Park. Jasta asked him whether he would consider joining Linkin Park as Chester Bennington’s replacement if the band asked him to do so.

Upon hearing this, Deryck Whibley stated that being Chester Bennington’s replacement is impossible to handle, and Bennington’s shoes are impossible to fill. He then said he doesn’t know about Linkin Park’s plans, and he has no idea who could fill in for Bennington or how it would sound.

Moreover, Deryck Whibley said that joining Linkin Park is not possible for him, and it even feels weird when he thinks about this possibility. Adding that it’s even odd to ‘joke think’ about this, Whibley said he is unsure how someone could fill Bennington’s shoes as it would be a challenging task.

During the conversation, Jamey Jasta told Deryck Whibley the following:

“I watched a video with you bringing out Mike Shinoda and doing a Linkin Park cover. I was really impressed, and we’ve talked about if they ever decided on going further and bringing the band back, who could fill Chester’s shoes.

For whatever reason, I never thought of you until I saw this video, but would you be open to that? Because you seem like a perfect fit — your voice is in a similar range. It was great; I was really impressed.”

As a response, Deryck Whibley said:

I think that’s an impossible task; I think those are impossible shoes to fill. I don’t know if they’re ever going to do anything. I have no idea what that’s going to look like or who that could be.”

He then continued:

“[Joining Linkin Park] is such a non-possibility that it’s too weird to even, like, sort of ‘joke-think’ about it. [Laughs] I don’t know. I don’t know how someone could fill those shoes. I think it would be tough.”
