Sum 41’s frontman Deryck Whibley shared a candid reflection about his battle with addiction on Instagram.

“11 years since I f*cked it all up… And then turned it all around,” Whibley stated. “On the evening of April 14th, 2014, I poured what would be my last drink—and collapsed to the floor. I was in excruciating pain, in shock, barely coherent. I knew something was seriously wrong, but had no idea how bad it was.”

“I was rushed to the hospital with liver and kidney failure, where I remained for a month,” he continued. “I was placed into a medically induced coma and heavily sedated for a week. When I finally woke up, I had no memory of where I was or how I got there. I had a full beard I didn’t remember growing. People around me looked heartbroken—some angry, others devastated. My life was in shambles.”

“I let myself down. I let my family and friends down. But worst of all, I let the band and the Sum 41 fans down,” Whibley admitted. “And honestly, that’s the part that still hurts most.”

“The only reason the world knows I ended up in the hospital—or that I was in a coma—is because I chose to tell that story,” he explained. “I’ve laid it out in my book, in interviews. I’ve talked about how far I fell. How dark it got. What my addictions looked like—and how much they took from me.”

“I’ve always felt the need to be publicly accountable for how badly I f*cked up, in hopes it might help someone else,” he concluded. “So people understand how insanely easy it is to fall—and how slippery that slope is.”

Whibley’s 2014 health crisis became a defining moment in both his personal life and professional career.

People magazine revealed that doctors gave Whibley a 50/50 chance of survival during his hospitalization. The musician developed severe nerve damage in his feet. This condition made it impossible for him to stand for more than 30 seconds without rest.

His path to recovery challenged both his physical and mental strength. Spin reported that Whibley initially doubted his creative abilities without alcohol. He gradually embraced his new sober lifestyle.

By Christmas 2014, Whibley achieved a significant milestone by walking independently. People noted his return to performing through small solo shows in July 2015. This marked his first step back into music.

The experience transformed Whibley’s personal journey and revitalized Sum 41. His recovery paved the way for the band’s return to touring in 2016. He accomplished this despite still being in the early stages of physical rehabilitation.
