According to guitarist Dave Baksh, Sum 41’s farewell decision got support from the fans.
“It’s crazy. It’s like probably 70-30 in favour of us calling it quits,” the rocker replied when asked by 102.1 the Edge whether they have had any offers not to call it quits in a recent interview. “So, a lot of people are like, ‘Here’s money to stop.'”
Baksh’s bandmate Jason ‘Cone’ McCaslin added after him, “It is weird. I hear Deryck [Whibley] say this a couple weeks ago. He said that we have had offers to do festivals this summer. Well, like the band’s ending.”
The bassist also stated, “I’m like, I didn’t know that. Maybe we should reconsider.” Baksh then joked, “Cone, I don’t know how to tell you this, the four of us are doing festivals [laughs].”
Sum 41 played their final show of the farewell tour in Toronto on January 30, per NME. The band announced in late 2023 that they were breaking up after one last album and a farewell world tour, ‘Tour of the Setting Sum.’
The tour ended with 13 shows in Canada. Their final show was at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, where they played 29 songs, including parts of Slayer’s ‘Raining Blood’ and Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets.’
“Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives. We are forever grateful to our fans, both old and new, who have supported us,” Sum 41 said in 2023 about the disbandment. “It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you, and we wanted you to hear this from her us first.”
The group went on to say, “Sum 41 will be disbanding. We will still be finishing all of our current upcoming tour dates this year, and we’re looking forward to releasing our final album ‘Heaven :x: Hell,’ along with a final worldwide headlining tour to celebrate. Details will be announced as soon as we have them.”
“For now, we look forward to seeing all of you skunks on the road and are excited about what the future will bring for each of us. Thank you for the last 27 years of Sum 41,” they concluded their statement.
Noodles from The Offspring was sad about Sum 41’s farewell decision and praised their music and energy to Heavy Consequence. He hoped they might reunite one day. He also met them at Riot Fest 2024 and felt sad to see them go.
