Michael Sweet, the lead vocalist of the rock band Stryper, recently shared a health concern with fans on Instagram. Sweet announced that he is undergoing a biopsy on a nodule in his right thyroid that has developed new calcification.
The musician explained the context of his medical situation, noting that his left thyroid was previously removed due to a malignant nodule. In his statement, Sweet requested prayers and support from his fans during this time.
“Prayers appreciated today. I’m having a biopsy done on a nodule in my right thyroid that has some new calcification,” Sweet said. “My left thyroid was removed a few years ago due to a malignant nodule.”
Sweet emphasized the importance of faith and community support in facing health challenges. He acknowledged that people lead busy lives but expressed his appreciation for any prayers offered on his behalf.
“I know everyone is busy and we all have hectic lives but if you can find a moment, I would appreciate any prayers that you can offer up,” he continued. “I’ve always believed in prayer and I’ve seen its power time and time again. Much love to you all and I will keep you posted. Have a blessed day.”
This latest health update marks another chapter in the Stryper frontman’s ongoing thyroid health journey. Michael Sweet underwent partial thyroidectomy surgery in December 2023 to remove the left side of his thyroid due to thyroid cancer, Antimusic reported. Following this procedure, his doctors have been closely monitoring a 9mm nodule in the remaining right side of his thyroid.
Although the nodule’s size has remained relatively unchanged since the initial surgery, new macrocalcification—large calcium deposits—has developed within it. This development prompted the need for the current biopsy to determine the nature of this calcification. Antimusic noted that Sweet has speculated about potential exposure risks, mentioning that he previously worked applying Roundup in cranberry bogs. Thyroid cancer does not run in his family.
The health challenges have extended beyond his thyroid condition. Changes in his voice over the past several years are likely related to thyroid issues and the anatomical challenges near his vocal folds, which affect vocal range and control, Antimusic reported. His health journey has also included other symptoms such as vision problems, which he has discussed publicly in various interviews.
As Sweet continues to navigate his health challenges, he remains committed to keeping his fans informed about his medical journey. The biopsy results will help determine the next steps in his treatment plan. The Stryper frontman has indicated that he will provide updates as his situation develops.
