Stevie Nicks Shares Why She Decided To Cover A Stephen Stills Song

After a long hiatus, Stevie Nicks recently announced her upcoming cover of a Stephen Stills track via her official Twitter account.
It can be said that history has a tendency to repeat itself, and it seems like music also comes in a full circle. After over five decades from its initial release, the 1966 single of Buffalo Springfield, ‘For What It’s Worth,’ has been covered by none other than Stevie Nicks. As Nicks explained the song’s importance to her, she also disclosed why she chose to cover this particular song.
The world has been going through various drastic changes in the past years. From the COVID-19 pandemic to the recent social disputes, times of uncertainty have affected societies worldwide. In ‘For What It’s Worth,’ Stephen Stills told the tale of political conflicts and nationwide disputes. Some commented that the song embraced an anti-war message, while others said that it addressed a counterculture resistance of the ’60s.
The tone and the lyrics of the track evolved through time and were well-suited for any hardships societies might face. It can also be said that Stevie Nicks agrees with this, as she announced her reasons for covering this hit song through a handwritten note she shared on her Twitter account.
As Stevie expressed her excitement about the release of her new single, she addressed that ‘For What It’s Worth’ had a significant meaning for her back when the song was released in 1966. Nicks added that the track has maintained its importance to her and that she had always wanted to sing her version from the perspective of a woman.
The musician stated that ‘For What It’s Worth’ carries a contemporary message as the track’s theme is still relatable, especially considering the recent worldwide incidents. As the song explores the notions of liberty and resistance, it could symbolize Stevie’s firm stance against various social conflicts, most recently on women’s abortion rights.
Stevie announced the release in the caption of her tweet:
“Friday! ‘For What It’s Worth.'”
The rocker also expressed her thoughts through the handwritten note:
“I am so excited to release my new song this Friday. It’s called ‘For What It’s Worth’ and it was written by Stephen Stills in 1966. It meant something to me then, and it means something to me now. I always wanted to interpret it through the eyes of a woman – and it seems like today, in the times we live in, it has a lot to say… I can’t wait for you to hear it.”
The song will be released on September 23 and Stevie Nicks’ decision to cover ‘For What It’s Worth’ shows how music can survive long decades and still be as influential as the day it was released for the first time. The musician is also currently on tour with her next show to be performed in Connecticut.
