Radiohead singer Thom Yorke recently joined a special Paul Thomas Anderson screening in London to talk about The Smile’s new album, ‘Wall Of Eyes.’ During the event, Yorke and his Smile bandmates shared details about the new album’s recording process.

The Smile recorded ‘Wall Of Eyes’ at Abbey Road Studios. During the chat, Thom was asked whether they felt any influence of The Beatles during the recordings. Apparently, they intentionally tried to avoid having any similarities to The Beatles. Yorke explained:

“We f*cking tried not to! I mean, we were in Abbey Road, but it’s like, ‘Let’s not do that, eh?’ The fact that we chose to do a tuning-sweep thing halfway through ‘Bending Hectic’ was just because it wanted that to happen rather than, ‘Hey, let’s do a Beatles song!'”

The Radiohead frontman also pointed out the depressing aspect of Abbey Road and said:

“That’s the weird thing about Abbey Road, it’s the best fucking studio in London – but there’s this touristy element where people go in just to say that they’ve been at Abbey Road. For people like us who’ve been working there on and off since the ’90s, it’s a bit depressing because it is a fantastic place.”

What About Radiohead’s Future?

The last time Radiohead members embarked on a tour together was the year 2018. Since then, Yorke, Philip Selway, and Colin Greenwood have been actively working on their solo careers. While fans started to lose hope of seeing Radiohead live again, Selway shared a reassuring statement about the band’s future.

Earlier in 2023, Philip joined an interview with Prog magazine and confirmed they were planning to get together again. According to the drummer, there was no need for fans to worry about Radiohead’s future. Selway explained:

“We’re always talking about stuff. But in terms of an actual kind of collective project, beyond the ‘Kid A’ and ‘Amnesiac’ stuff that we’ve been doing, it’s kind of further down the line for us when that will happen. We’re talking about that, but at the moment, everybody’s doing their own thing. When the pandemic happened, we’d always planned to take a vear off from Radiohead around that, so we could get on with other stuff. But that just meant that those other projects kind of grew, so we’re allowing time for all of those projects to go where they need to. But yeah, we’ll get together soon, and in the next couple of years, there will be something there of some sort.”

Even though Thom Yorke seemed to be busy with his new supergroup, The Smile, there is still hope for Radiohead’s comeback in the near future.
