System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan recently announced his decision to step back from vocal performances following what he described as a disappointing live show. He shared his thoughts on Instagram.

The announcement came after Dolmayan shared a performance of vocals during a live rendition of the band’s song “Bubble.” Vocalist Serj Tankian handed him the microphone for a portion of the performance.

“The last tour was the debut of my singing live on stage with system,” Dolmayan said. “Unfortunately this show I was still recovering from a bad fever and week long sickness and had lost my golden voice.”

The drummer explained his decision with characteristic humor. He acknowledged the reaction from his bandmates.

“Making my band members laugh is always fun, and they all laughed at this moment but I’m sad to say I retired from vocals thanks to this horrible performance!” he continued.

The video shared on Instagram shows the moment during the live performance that prompted Dolmayan’s humorous retirement announcement from vocal duties.

Dolmayan’s vocal retirement announcement was made in jest. It highlights the enduring chemistry between the band members who have been performing together for decades.

Wikipedia reported that Dolmayan joined System of a Down in 1997. He has been instrumental in shaping the band’s distinctive sound through his intricate drumming style. His percussion work has helped define the band’s unique blend of rock, metal, hip-hop, and Armenian folk influences across five studio albums.

The drummer’s technical prowess is particularly evident in the band’s biggest hits. YouTube performance videos showed his drumming on tracks like “Chop Suey!” showcases the intensity and precision that has earned him critical acclaim throughout his career with the band.

Despite occasional creative tensions within the group, the camaraderie between Dolmayan and his bandmates remains strong. Loudwire documented this bond when Serj Tankian joined Dolmayan for an impromptu street performance of “Aerials” to celebrate the drummer’s 50th birthday. This showed their friendship extends well beyond the stage.

The band continues to maintain an active touring schedule. System of a Down is currently performing across Latin America and North America in 2025. Wikipedia noted that the group remains one of the most successful alternative metal bands. They have sold over 40 million records worldwide since their formation.
