Kiki Wong, The Smashing Pumpkins’ newest guitarist, shared insights about her musical evolution in a recent interview with Guitar World.
The discussion focused on her metal background and its impact on her current role with the Smashing Pumpkins. Wong openly addressed both the advantages and limitations of her metal-focused past.
“I honestly just wanted to play what I liked the most – which is metal – my whole life. It helped keep me super-focused and interested in playing and practicing,” Wong said. “However, it did end up making me a one-trick pony, always blasting the dirtiest distortion and not really having a whole lot of dynamics to my playing.”
Wong expressed gratitude toward Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan for broadening her musical perspective.
“I have a lot to attribute to Billy. He’s developed a distinct playing style that when you hear it, you go, ‘That’s Billy Corgan,’ which I think is what we all strive to do as musicians,” she continued. “Learning his style was hard, but it helped me play with more feel and vibe. The first week of rehearsal was like a musical boot camp that taught me more than 20 years of playing by myself did.”
Her path to the Smashing Pumpkins demonstrates her commitment to both music and academics.
WTOP News reported that Wong stood out among 10,000 applicants to earn her position as the band’s newest guitarist in 2024. This achievement marked a pivotal moment in her musical journey.
Her musical versatility shone through her previous work with the girl band Nylon Pink, various sources noted. She has also cultivated a strong social media presence. Her TikTok account has attracted over a million followers through musical performances and engaging content.
