Former Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell passed away at age 56 due to liver failure. Steve’s manager recently reported that as he entered the final stage of liver failure and hospice at home, he had ‘only days to live.’ Smash Mouth posted on their IG and paid tribute to their former bandmate. In the post, they emphasised how focused and determined Steve was:

“Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger-than-life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle. Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom.”

They also praised Steve’s accomplishments and mentioned his authenticity:

“And the fact that he achieved this near-impossible goal with very limited musical experience makes his accomplishments all the more remarkable. His only tools were his irrepressible charm and charisma, his fearlessly reckless ambition, and his king-size cajones.”

Finally, they paid a heartfelt tribute to their friend:

“Steve lived a 100% full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out. Good night Heevo Veev. Rest in peace knowing you aimed for the stars, and magically hit your target.”

Steve’s health has declined rapidly over the years and in 2021, he was no longer in condition to perform on stage. Back then, his representative released a statement, announcing his retirement.

“Steve has been dealing with long-term medical issues over the last eight years and during his last performance at the Big Sip stage, he suffered numerous symptoms directly linked with his current medical situation. As of today, Steve will be retiring from Smash Mouth to focus on his physical and mental health.”

Musicians and celebrities who were close to Harwell paid tribute to the late singer. Chris Kirkpatrick posted Steve’s photo and wrote:

“Rest easy my friend. I’m truly sorry for the difficult battle you had to fight. You were an amazing soul and will be deeply missed.”

NSync’s Joey Fatone posted an old photo of them together and mentioned their friendship which dates back:

“Known this dude for a very long time… Opened for NSync and even was my wedding singer at my wedding. We had some good times! Sad all things must come to an end and sometimes too soon due to things that are past fixing because too much damage has been done…”

Fatone also emphasised the importance of battling against substance abuse and addiction:

“But let’s be real it’s never too late! Hopefully, people out there that are dealing with addiction get the right help that they need. It’s a crazy world we live in now… Thinking /praying for all… RIP Steve!”

Guy Fieri posted a series of their photos together, and wrote a short note:

“To my brutha Steve, RIP. Today is a sad day, I will miss my friend.”
