In an interview for Modern Drummer magazine, Slipknot’s Eloy Casagrande shared his thoughts on the Sepultura’s new drummer Greyson Nekrutman.
“Yes, and when I see him playing, I can remember myself in the same spot,” he said. “When I joined Sepultura, I was his age. That’s quite interesting. He’s a very good drummer. I used to watch him playing videos he posted on social media when he was playing more jazz and drum solos. He’s a brilliant player and I wish him and the rest of the band all the best. I have a lot of respect for him.”
Even though Eloy is no longer in Sepultura, he still feels a connection to the band and to Greyson. “I wish I could talk to him more one day. Maybe we could bring all the Sepultura drummers together.”
The drummer also shared a story about when Greyson came to his studio in São Paulo after joining Sepultura. “Greyson came to my studio in São Paulo when he joined the band to do some rehearsals, and we had a very good talk. He had just two or three weeks to learn all the songs, so I gave him some advice like, ‘We used to play that song faster. Be careful with this song because we used to play it slower.'”
He added, “I wasn’t teaching him how to play the songs because he can play anything he wants to play. He’s an incredible drummer.”
In December 2023, Casagrande received a call from Slipknot’s manager. The call eventually caused his departure from Sepultura. Just two months later, he replaced Jay Weinberg as Slipknot’s drummer for their 25th anniversary tour. This meant Eloy had to leave Sepultura just before their 40th-anniversary farewell tour rehearsals began.
After Casagrande’s sudden exit, Greyson Nekrutman joined Sepultura. The band announced the change on February 27, 2024, through their social media accounts.
However, fans are happy with the change since they think Nekrutman is a better drummer.
Slipknot recently finished the North American leg of their ‘Here Comes The Pain’ tour. The tour was part of the band’s celebration of the 25th anniversary of their debut album.
