Slipknot has concluded their mysterious countdown that began weeks ago. The band revealed a special 25th anniversary re-release of their debut self-titled album, as announced on Slipknot Merch.
The countdown ended on July 22nd. It unveiled an extensive collector’s edition featuring rare and unreleased material from the band’s archives.
The announcement for the new release read: “Slipknot 6LP (25th Anniversary Blood Filled Box Set) with exclusive new artwork and unseen imagery collected from the band’s personal archives, 59 recordings including Slipknot’s legendary Indigo Ranch demos / mixes, live versions and other rarities, 40 of them unreleased, across 6 color LPs, and 9 new Slipknot collectors photo cards.”
This commemorative release celebrates the legacy of an album that fundamentally changed the metal landscape. It established Slipknot as one of the genre’s most influential acts.
The self-titled debut album was originally released on June 29, 1999, through Roadrunner Records. This marked the beginning of Slipknot’s rise to mainstream success. The album’s creation was an intense process that took place at Indigo Ranch Studios in California. The band worked with producer Ross Robinson to capture their raw, aggressive sound.
Crack Magazine documented that producer Ross Robinson pushed the band to deliver primal performances during recording sessions. He famously drove drummer Joey Jordison to play until his hands bled. This extreme approach to recording helped create the album’s distinctive brutal sound that would become Slipknot’s signature.
The debut album holds historical significance as the only Slipknot release to feature original guitarist Josh Brainard. He left the band after recording was completed. Wikipedia’s Slipknot discography noted that this lineup change marked the end of an era before the band evolved into their more recognizable nine-member formation.
The commercial impact of the self-titled album was substantial. It peaked at number 51 on the Billboard 200 and eventually achieved double platinum status in the United States. This success established it as Slipknot’s best-selling album to date. It helped carve a place for extreme metal in mainstream pop culture during the late 1990s.
