Sharon Osbourne recently confirmed that Black Sabbath has successfully retrieved their early Earth demos after settling a long-standing dispute with their former manager Jim Simpson. This was revealed during The Osbournes podcast.

The discussion centered on the resolution of a famous clash between the band and their first manager over valuable early recordings from when Black Sabbath was still known as Earth.

“We can say that we settled with Jim Simpson and the bands now have their [Earth] demos back. Own it, which is where it should be,” Sharon Osbourne said. “All of that stuff should be should be theirs. So, it all ended well. So, yeah, they own them and we’re going to talk about what everybody wants to do with it, you know, and we’ll go from there.”

Sharon emphasized the historical significance of these recordings and additional materials that were recovered.

“I just think it’s historically important. For music lovers of that genre,” she continued. “And then we got the pictures that were taken at that time, too. So that is all so important. I mean, listen, you want those pictures. Everybody’s in the band’s kids and grandkids would love to see, you know. It’s special.”

She expressed gratitude toward Simpson for ultimately doing what she considered the right thing for the band.

“And I’m just happy that it’s where it should be with, you know, with the band and everyone can decide what they want to do as a band, what they’re going to do with it. And thank you to Jim. He did the right thing at the end of the day. He did the right thing for the band,” Sharon concluded.

Jack Osbourne also shared his thoughts on the recovered material: “I listened to it last night. It’s great. It’s different. I’m glad it resolved the way it did and I think now it will get the love and justice it deserves.”

The recovered demos represent a crucial piece of heavy metal history. They capture Black Sabbath during their formative period before they became one of the most influential bands in rock music.

Black Sabbath Wiki reported that Earth was an English blues rock band formed in 1968 out of The Polka Tulk Blues Band. The group consisted of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. The band underwent this name change before eventually settling on Black Sabbath, marking the beginning of their legendary career.

The transformation from Earth to Black Sabbath occurred on a specific date that has become significant in rock history. American Songwriter documented that the band changed their name to Black Sabbath on August 30, 1969. Ozzy Osbourne announced the new name during a performance in Workington, England, inspired by their signature song of the same title.

Louder Sound revealed that the recovered recordings were originally made at Zella Studio in Birmingham in 1969. They include covers of blues standards like “Blue Suede Shoes” and originals such as “Wicked World” and “Warning.” These tracks showcase the band’s blues-rock sound before their transition to heavy metal. These recordings provide insight into the musical evolution that would eventually lead to the creation of heavy metal as a genre.

The settlement with Jim Simpson closes a chapter in Black Sabbath’s complex history with their early management. The band and the Osbourne family will now decide how to handle these historically significant recordings moving forward. This could potentially give fans unprecedented access to the origins of one of metal’s most important bands.
