Sevendust singer Lajon Witherspoon recently opened up about the band’s pre-show rituals. He revealed their spiritual preparation routine in an interview with Music Interview Corner.

The vocalist discussed the band’s warm-up process. He highlighted a meaningful tradition that has remained constant throughout their career.

“I like to do my warm-ups. I like to play all kind of different kind of music. We do a lot of dancing, a lot of joking,” Witherspoon said. “But the thing that we do every night before we’ve gone on since the day we started is we pray together as a band.”

The prayer ritual has become an inclusive practice that extends beyond the band members themselves.

“And if you happen to be here and you pass me, I’m gonna bring you in the prayer,” he continued. “But one good thing is Brian Marshall from [Sevendust’s 2026 European tourmates] Alter Bridge shows up for the prayer every night with us. He makes a point to come to find us, to pray with us.”

Witherspoon explained the purpose behind their nightly prayer tradition.

“I do a prayer to thank for everything that we have, and we’re so very blessed to be here and to make sure that everyone that shows up gets home safely too,” he said. “And let’s go out here and rock it.”

This spiritual approach to performance preparation reflects the deep bonds that have kept Sevendust together for over three decades. It makes them one of the most enduring acts in alternative metal.

Last.fm reported that Sevendust is an American alternative metal band from Atlanta, Georgia that was formed in 1994 by bassist Vince Hornsby, drummer Morgan Rose and guitarist John Connolly. The band’s formation story adds context to their current unity, as they’ve maintained remarkable stability in their lineup over the years.

Give Me Metal noted that the band has managed to have a consistent lineup over the years with vocalist Lajon Witherspoon, guitarist John Connolly, bassist Vince Hornsby, drummer Morgan Rose, and guitarist Clint Lowery. This stability has been crucial to developing the kind of brotherhood that makes their prayer ritual so meaningful.

The addition of Witherspoon to the group was particularly significant to their spiritual dynamic. Screamer Magazine revealed that Witherspoon was originally an R&B vocalist recruited from the band Body & Soul. He brought diverse musical influences that helped shape Sevendust’s unique sound and approach to performance.

Metal Underground confirmed that after their first demo, lead vocalist Lajon Witherspoon joined the founding members. This completed the core lineup that would go on to establish the prayer tradition that continues to this day. This long-standing practice demonstrates how the band’s spiritual foundation has remained as consistent as their musical partnership.
