Scott Weiland’s son Noah has publicly responded to Billy Corgan’s recent claims about his late father. He addressed the Smashing Pumpkins frontman’s comments in a statement shared on Instagram.
The response came after Corgan suggested that Stone Temple Pilots had “ripped off” a Smashing Pumpkins song during a conversation with Robert DeLeo on his YouTube channel.
Billy Corgan previously said to Robert DeLeo during their conversation on his YouTube channel: “Do you know that Scott [Weiland] ripped off a Pumpkin song in that song [Stone Temple Pilots’ song ‘Plush’]? There’s a part in the Pumpkin song ‘Suffer,’ [sings the chorus]. So I’m watching MTV somewhere in America, and that song comes on and I hear that and I’m like [shocked]. Good rip though.'”
Noah Weiland fired back with a strong defense of his father’s legacy.
“This is why the rock scene is absolutely insufferable to me,” Noah responded. “It’s like listening to 3 senile old heads tell you a story about some sh*t that never happened because they’re losing their marbles. Put some respect on my father’s name for f*cks sake.”
The current dispute adds another layer to the complex relationship between these two influential grunge-era bands and their frontmen.
Alternative Nation reported that Stone Temple Pilots’ guitarist Dean DeLeo later responded to Corgan’s claims by stating he could not hear the similarities between “Plush” and “Suffer.” DeLeo mentioned that he checked both songs after the podcast and found no resemblance. This directly contradicts Corgan’s assertion about the alleged musical theft.
The relationship between the two bands has been marked by both rivalry and mutual respect over the years. Alternative Nation also noted that DeLeo shared a more positive memory. He mentioned that Scott Weiland had loved the title for their album “Tiny Music Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop.” This demonstrates the collaborative and creative nature within Stone Temple Pilots during their peak years.
Despite the current controversy, Billy Corgan had previously shown respect for Weiland following his death in 2015. Alternative Nation revealed that Corgan acknowledged Weiland’s passing with a tribute that read: “At least in that, may I now say he is undoubtedly in the arms of grace and eternal love.” This previous statement illustrates the complexity in the dynamics between the two rock icons. It makes the current dispute even more significant.
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions within the rock community regarding artistic influences and legacy disputes. This is particularly true when it involves deceased musicians who cannot defend themselves. Noah’s passionate defense of his father’s reputation reflects the ongoing impact these public statements can have on family members and fans alike.
