Sammy Hagar recently appeared as a guest on THAT Rocks! and explained why he feels a sense of pity for his son Andrew, who is also involved in the music business.
The host, Eddie Trunk, initially said to the Red Rocker:
“What’s interesting, Sammy, is that there are so many artists now who have kids that are doing music. I mean, everybody, Slash, Lars Ulrich, everybody. And there’s this misnomer because they think, ‘Well, it’s just such an easy ride for them because of who their parents are.'”
He continued:
“Not the case at all because you’ve got to overcome that, and you still gotta be good. How many famous people had kids that went nowhere in music? So, you still gotta deliver, you still gotta get the breaks. It’s really not an easy ride.”
Hagar replied, acknowledging the difficulty for his son:
“100%. I feel sorry for him, you know, and I try to help him, like my people, my friends, like you, and say, ‘Check it out.’ I don’t say to you, ‘Hey man, you play this around f*cking.'”
Trunk interrupted and said:
“No, yeah, I know I played it because it was good, as you told me as well.”
Then the singer also shared his advice to Andrew, explaining:
“Yeah, I said, ‘Listen to it, and you’ll play it.’ So, I don’t know; it’s a weird thing out there. I really don’t know how to do it. I just said, ‘You got the money; you have a trust fund. Buy yourself a van that sleeps for and a little trailer on the back, and get your f*cking a** out on the road and play for 10 people. Yeah, it doesn’t matter; just go into some bar and say, ‘Hey, nobody’s here. Can we play?’ Alright, we’ll play for a beer and a half and a hamburger.’ So, he’s thinking about doing that.”
As the son of a famous artist like Eddie Van Halen, Wolfgang shared his thoughts on this issue and said a few years ago that although his surname opened doors, it didn’t guarantee success. He also discussed in a different interview that he needed to prove his worth and show his musical capabilities to sustain his presence in the business.
