Rush frontman Geddy Lee took to Instagram to share his reaction to the retirement of Iron Maiden’s drummer Nicko McBrain.

“I want to tip my hat, and congratulate one of Rock’s most talented and truly iconic drummers, Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain, on his recent retirement from touring. One of the warmest and friendliest dudes I’ve ever had the sincere pleasure to spend a bit of time with,” he wrote. “What a career mate! Well done Nicko!”

Another Rush member, Alex Lifeson, also reacted to the drummer’s decision in the comments section. “I echo that sentiment. Amazing career and I’m happy I got to see you play one more last month. Be well, buddy. Al.”

Many rockers shared their thoughts on the matter on social media. Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy wrote in a post: “Shocked to hear the announcement of Nicko McBrain’s retirement from touring with Iron Maiden. I wish my friend all the best in his retirement… thanks for all the years of music and friendship, you’re the best Nicko!”

Scott Ian of Anthrax shared video clips of his son, Revel, playing on McBrain’s warmup drum kit backstage at Iron Maiden shows. Ian mentioned, “Nicko made sure everyone backstage knew that that was Revel’s warmup kit as well,” highlighting their long friendship that dates back to 1986.

Jeff Scott Soto shared in a separate post, “When Clive Burr exited Maiden, I was bummed as he had a unique take on Maiden’s music…when I 1st heard Nicko on ‘Piece Of Mind,’ I was convinced the band were in great hands going into the future! Thank you Nicko for your contributions and loyalty…and a hell of a nice guy to boot! Up The Irons to you sir.”

During his last show, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson paid tribute to McBrain.

The drummer announced his retirement in a statement on December 7, saying he made his decision ‘after much consideration’ but would still remain a part of the Iron Maiden family. The rocker thanked his fans, family, friends, and fans for supporting him on his journey with the band.
