Rod Stewart Admits Refusing ‘A Lot Of Money’ To Perform In Qatar

As the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Qatar approaches, the names that will perform during the tournament have also started being announced. BTS star Jung Kook, US rapper Diplo, DJ Calvin Harris, and Jamaican singer Sean Paul are some artists who will take the stage. It seems like the organizers also made an offer also to Rod Stewart, as he revealed in a new chat with the Sunday Times.

“I was actually offered a lot of money, over $1 million, to play there 15 months ago,” the singer disclosed before explaining his reason for rejecting the lucrative offer. “I turned it down. It’s not right to go. And the Iranians should be out, too, for supplying arms. Tell you what, supporters have got to watch out, haven’t they?”

FIFA organizers have been subjected to many criticisms for their decision to host the upcoming championship in Qatar due to the ongoing controversies related to the country. Qatar’s treatment of migrant workers is under the spotlight since many deaths occurred during the construction of the stadiums.

Besides poor labor laws, another controversy has surrounded the criminalization of same-sex relationships in the host nation. As homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, the LGBTQ+ community hoping to travel to the country has expressed concerns. This has been a subject that has received a lot of reactions from the music world, where diversity has been embraced to a great extent.

So, Rod Stewart declared that he immediately turned down the offer to perform at the tournament, saying that he also shares the same concerns with the rest of the world. He is not the only musician who rejected playing concerts in Qatar, as Dua Lipa also recently denied the rumors about her World Cup appearance by calling out the human rights issues in the country.
