Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo appeared on 101 WRIF, and during the discussion, he recalled how Anthrax took revenge on the fans that hurt him.
After the host shared that he hosted the Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante right before his interview, he asked the bassist about the story Benante shared and whether or not Anthrax actually jumped in the crowd. He agreed and started the story:
“That’s when our relationship with Anthrax for me officially became real because those guys stood up for me and went out there from toe to toe. Now look, at the time it wasn’t like the fans were pissed off, they were angry at a technical issue. They couldn’t even see us because we were behind the amps warming up.”
He continued by telling how he got hurt:
“Back then you could have glass beer bottles, and they chucked a bottle and it went over the base amp and I had been kind of hunkered down, practicing getting ready and there was a problem with the PA system so they were getting impatient. But that bottle hit me in the head, and I just kinda saw red and went out in front of the stage and my face was bleeding and I’m like calling people out, and there’s like freaking 15, 20 thousand people out there, of course.”
Trujillo Almost Fought Over Ten Thousand People

After getting hit with a glass beer bottle in the had, the bassist almost fought the entire crowd with the anger of the situation. Fortunately, he was calmed down by one of his team members. He continued:
“Everybody’s drunk so they’re like, ‘Yeah cool, let’s fight!’ And I literally was gonna try and go there and fight 10 thousand people, I don’t know what I was thinking, I was young and dumb. So I was pulled to the side by the tour manager and said, ‘You gotta play in a couple minutes here.’ So they bandaged me like I had a toothache and then they put the hat on, and then we went out there and played.”
Apparently, it wasn’t only the Antrax members who tried to take revenge for hurting the bassist. Trujillo revealed who else was involved in the fight:
“During the time I was getting bandaged up; apparently, my [Suicidal Tendencies] band members and some of the Anthrax team went out there and started socking people up. That good old-fashioned sock up.”
The Two Band’s Meeting Before Trujillo

Anthrax first met Metallica during their Dave Mustaine era. The Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian revealed that he was impressed by the band while watching them jam. Ian was especially impressed by the late Cliff Burton’s playing skills after Mustaine was fired from the band. In his words, Burton felt the strength and the depth of the music, so it did not matter whether they were in a studio or a live performance.
