Ritchie Blackmore’s wife Candice Night has opened up about the legendary guitarist’s ongoing health struggles. She provided details about multiple medical conditions affecting the Deep Purple and Rainbow founder. Her comments were shared during an interview on the Iron City Rocks podcast.
Night explained the three primary health issues currently impacting her husband’s well-being and musical abilities.
“There’s the three main issues with him that are going on. He has a heart issue. He had a heart attack a couple of years ago, so we stay on top of that,” Night said. “He’s got gout, so that’s difficult.”
She elaborated on how these conditions are affecting Blackmore’s mobility and ability to perform.
“It’s affecting his feet really badly. And it’s starting in his forefinger, so it’s hurting the mobility in that, so he just had an injection for that,” she continued. “And his back, of course, which has always been an issue.”
Night also noted how the heart condition has complicated treatment options for his other ailments.
“He hasn’t taken any back injections since he had the heart issue. So everything kind of is working together. So, it’s hard — it is hard for him,” she explained. “But he’s at the point now where — he’s very smart when it comes to things like that.”
The health challenges represent significant obstacles for the 79-year-old guitarist. They particularly affect his ability to play guitar and perform.
These health issues have had a profound impact on Blackmore’s ability to continue performing at the level his fans have come to expect. The combination of physical ailments has created a cascade of limitations that affect every aspect of his musical career.
Blabbermouth reported that standing on stage has become increasingly difficult for the legendary musician, even just with the guitars. This physical limitation has forced him to reconsider how he approaches live performances. It has also impacted his stamina during shows.
The heart attack that occurred a couple of years ago has proven to be particularly restrictive for Blackmore’s touring schedule. Guitar Player noted that following his heart attack and the placement of six coronary stents, his medical team advised him against air travel. This medical restriction has significantly limited the band’s ability to tour internationally.
As a result of these travel limitations, Ultimate Classic Rock revealed that Blackmore’s performances have been confined mainly to locations accessible by car within the United States. This represents a dramatic shift for an artist who spent decades touring globally with both Deep Purple and Rainbow.
The guitarist’s current situation highlights the challenges faced by aging rock legends who must balance their passion for music with the realities of declining health. Despite these obstacles, Night’s comments suggest that Blackmore continues to approach his health management with intelligence and determination.
