Richie Faulkner Explains The Different Method He Used For New Judas Priest Album

Judas Priest guitarist Richie Faulkner recently shared in an interview with Canada’s The Metal Voice the approach he took while crafting guitar parts for the band’s forthcoming album, ‘Invincible Shield.’

The musician described his usual method of spontaneously coming up with riffs and sections, a practice he has maintained throughout his time with the band. However, the pandemic lockdowns provided him with an unusual opportunity for more in-depth development of musical parts, including solos. Faulkner explained:

“I’ve always done that with the three albums [I’ve done] with the band [so far], but what I did differently this time, we had a bit more time to develop riffs and solos and musical parts because of the lockdowns of the pandemic. So, there were a few solos on this record, which I actually worked out. I don’t usually do that. I usually play some off-the-cuff solos in the studio… And you build it around them. But a few of them on this record I actually worked out.”

Building On ‘Firepower’s’ Success

In a related discussion, Judas Priest singer Rob Halford also spoke about the band’s ambition for their new album in a January interview with Metal Express Radio. Following the success of their 2018 album ‘Firepower,’ the band faced the challenge of surpassing their previous work. Halford emphasized the importance of letting go of past successes to create something fresh, noting:

“What’s the point of trying to emulate something that you’ve already done? We’ve just gotta do like we’ve always done with Priest, the way that every album has its own concept, every album has its own thing. ‘British Steel’ isn’t ‘Painkiller’; ‘Painkiller’ isn’t ‘Point Of Entry’; ‘Point Of Entry’ isn’t ‘Nostradamus.’ So this album is shaping up to be its own thing.”

The vocalist mentioned that the music was complete, and now it was his turn to work on the vocals. He expressed satisfaction with how the album was shaping up.

‘Invincible Shield’ is scheduled for release on March 8, 2024. The album’s first single, ‘Panic Attack,’ was released for streaming on October 13. The second single, ‘Trial by Fire,’ was released on November 17, 2023. Two months later, the third single, ‘Crown of Horns,’ was also released.
