Queen’s Brian May recently shared his concerns about the current state of the world, expressing deep pessimism about humanity’s future in an interview with Radio Times.

The legendary guitarist opened up about his sleepless nights and growing despair over global issues. His comments revealed a profound sense of disillusionment with modern society.

“I feel despondent about the world of humans. It keeps me awake at night,” May said. “The cruelty, the ignorance, the lies, the rewriting of history. I think an understanding and love of art and music make it impossible to be the kind of person who wants to go out and be cruel to others.”

May continued to elaborate on his concerns about the current social climate and humanity’s capacity for compassion.

“There’s so much suffering in the world. Why would we want to add to it?” he continued. “We’ve lost the ability to discuss things and respect other people’s point of view, we have a horrendous polarization.”

The Queen guitarist’s candid remarks highlight his struggle to maintain optimism in an increasingly divided world.

May’s pessimistic outlook extends beyond social issues to encompass broader environmental and planetary concerns that have long occupied his thoughts as both a scientist and activist.

Ultimate Classic Rock reported that May has consistently advocated for a “major change of philosophy” in how humans treat Earth and other species amid climate change and pollution. The astrophysicist-turned-rock star has repeatedly emphasized that humans must “sort out how we behave on our own planet before we venture out into space.”

May’s activism extends far beyond his musical career. Prospect Magazine noted that he serves as Vice-President of the RSPCA and founded the Save Me campaign against fox hunting, demonstrating his long-standing commitment to animal welfare causes.

The Queen guitarist has proposed concrete action to address global challenges. LiveKindly revealed that May has called for a Live Aid-style concert specifically focused on raising awareness about climate change. He believes that such an event could mobilize public opinion and action on environmental issues.

May’s environmental concerns reflect his unique perspective as both a celebrated musician and accomplished scientist. His dual expertise brings together his artistic sensibilities with his scientific understanding of planetary challenges. This allows him to articulate the urgency of global issues while maintaining hope that human creativity and compassion can still make a difference.
