Prince Wasn’t Fun To Hang Out With, According To His Former Manager

Prince’s former manager David Libert recently spoke to Ultimate Classic Rock and claimed that hanging out with Prince wasn’t a fun activity.

David Libert began his musical endeavors by forming the Happenings but then switched to the music business and became tour manager for Alice Cooper between 1971 and 1975. In 1975, Libert moved to LA and opened his agency a year later, representing George Clinton, P-Funk, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, The Runaways, and many more.

On September 23, he released a new memoir titled ‘Rock And Roll Warrior: My Misadventures With Alice Cooper, Prince, George Clinton, Living Colour, The Runaways, And More…’ In this 273-page memoir, Libert talked about working with Prince. He met Prince at Clinton’s Thanksgiving dinner and hung out with him while Sheila E. was the opening act of his Purple Rain tour.

In the interview with UCR, Libert argued Prince was actually a tough person to deal with. According to Libert, Prince was very antisocial and didn’t know how to communicate with people, so he always pretended to be angry. Although the musician was very nice to him, Libert said Prince wasn’t fun to hang out with. However, he described spending time with Prince as an interesting experience.

Speaking to Ultimate Classic Rock, David Libert said the following about Prince:

“I liked Prince. He was a tough guy to deal with, but not for me. He was very nice to me. Prince was very antisocial; he felt awkward in social situations. He didn’t know how to deal with people on a certain level, so he pretended he was always angry.

But he was nice to me because, I guess, he didn’t want to look stupid in front of me, which is amazing that Prince would even care what I thought about him. But I was older than anybody else in his inner circle, and because I worked with George Clinton, that got me some respect. But I’m guessing on all of this.”

He then continued, revealing how he avoided Prince’s company:

“I liked him, but I didn’t want to be obligated to go to his room every night with the select group of people he invited. Prince was not fun to hang out with, that’s for damn sure. But, yeah, it was an interesting experience. I seemed to go there every once in a while, and it seemed like he was happy to see me whenever I did, so that was nice.”

As David Libert said, he didn’t want to go to Prince’s hotel room with the selected people he invited because spending time with Prince wasn’t fun. So, he visited him once in a while and shared his comments on Prince’s shows.
