Just two months after longtime drummer Tim ‘Herb’ Alexander left, Primus is back and getting ready to hold auditions for a new drummer.

The band’s first show since Alexander’s last performance in August took place during their New Year’s Eve shows at the Fox Theater in Oakland on December 30. The night started with performances from Les Claypool’s other bands, Holy Mackerel, and Frog Brigade, followed by a six-song set from Primus with Bryan ‘Brain’ Mantia on drums.

Mantia had been Primus’ drummer in 1989 before Alexander took over, and he returned after Alexander’s first departure, staying until the band split in 2000. After the band reunited in 2003, Alexander was their drummer until he took another break between 2010 and 2013.

Primus announced on October 29 that Alexander had resigned via email on October 17, citing a ‘loss of passion for playing.’ Claypool and guitarist Larry LaLonde said they were ‘completely shocked’ by the news.

Since his departure, the band has been looking for a ‘well-mannered’ drummer. The band posted the announcement on their social media accounts. “We are currently taking submissions from all points in the universe for the position of Primus drummer/percussionist. Seeking a well-mannered, affable individual with original sensibility and aesthetic, possessing a desire to open new doors in the creative world. Flashy chops are wonderful, but groove, pocket, and the ability to listen, react, and contribute to the musical conversation is a must.”

In late December, the band took to social media again to warn potential applicants about scammers who had started reaching out to those interested in the upcoming in-person auditions.

“It is our duty here in the Primus camp to at least give a ‘heads up’ as it were, to those who may be duped by these sad individuals who are obviously struggling with their own insecurities and shriveled genitalia,” the band wrote.

Currently, Primus is scheduled to perform with Tool’s Danny Carey at festival dates in the Dominican Republic in March, and they are set to launch a joint tour with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle in April.
