Phil Campbell On Why He Didn’t Go To Lemmy Kilmister’s Funeral

In a recent interview with Myglobalmind, former Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell talked about Lemmy Kilmister‘s final days and death. He also explained why he was unable to attend the late vocalist’s funeral.

In 2015, Motörhead had to cancel a few shows due to health problems within the band. Despite that, they ended their European tour in Berlin and were getting ready for the second half when Kilmister passed away a few weeks later, making it their final show. Since the late vocalist’s health was known to be declining before his death, in a recent interview, the band’s former guitarist was asked whether they were aware ‘things were not going well.’

In his response, Campbell stated that they knew the situation was unfavorable but did not anticipate that those would be their final days with Lemmy Kilmister. He explained that they were unprepared for the vocalist’s death news, and he could not even attend his funeral due to his bad health condition that caused him to be hospitalized that year.

Campbell recalled those days as follows:

“Yeah, we knew, but Lem wanted to just carry on then. I know the last tour in Germany; I think one or two shows were canceled ’cause I ended up in [the] hospital. And I came back out, and we finished the tour. And that was the last tour then; the last show was in Berlin. So the last week of Motörhead, actually, I was the one in [the] bloody hospital. But we never thought — when we parted at the end of the tour, we never thought that would be the last time we’d see each other. We didn’t have a chance to say goodbye, me or Mikkey, or nothing. I couldn’t even go over to the funeral ’cause my doctor advised me not to, ’cause I was pretty ill myself in them days.”

Despite the late vocalist’s declining health, his bandmates never thought he would pass away soon after their final show together. Thus, they never got to bid farewell, and Phil Campbell couldn’t even be at his funeral due to his severe health problems.
