Terrence Lee ‘Terry’ Glaze, the original vocalist of Pantera, has shared his thoughts on Phil Anselmo’s decision to revive the band without him. He spoke in an interview with The Hair Metal Guru.

Glaze offered a diplomatic perspective on the situation. He emphasized his support for artistic diversity and expressed gratitude for the different paths both he and his former bandmates have taken.

“There’s plenty of room for all kinds of art,” Glaze said. “And so thank goodness that everybody doesn’t like the same thing and we all like different things and there’s something for everybody.”

He continued with a positive outlook on both his and Pantera’s current endeavors.

“So it was great,” he said. “They’re out there doing it. I’m out there doing it. I feel so lucky.”

Glaze’s comments reflect the complex history between him and the band that would eventually become one of metal’s most influential acts.

Wikipedia reported that Glaze served as Pantera’s original singer before Phil Anselmo joined the band in the late 1980s. The band began as a glam metal group in the early 1980s. Glaze initially played rhythm guitar before focusing solely on vocals. He was part of the band during their first three albums, including Metal Magic in 1983, their glam metal debut produced by the Abbott brothers’ father.

The transformation of Pantera from their glam metal origins to groove metal pioneers occurred after Anselmo’s arrival. Simple Wikipedia noted that Pantera’s best-known lineup included the Abbott brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, Rex Brown, and Phil Anselmo. This lineup was responsible for pioneering the groove metal subgenre and achieving international fame. Pantera became one of the most influential heavy metal bands in history following their 1990 major label debut, Cowboys from Hell.

The band’s commercial success was substantial. Last.fm documented that Pantera sold around 20 million records worldwide and earned four Grammy nominations during their peak years. Their albums Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven both achieved multi-platinum status. This cemented their place in metal history.

The recent revival of Pantera has brought the band’s legacy back into the spotlight. Metal Fandom detailed that the current iteration is led by surviving members Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown. Touring musicians Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante fill the roles of the late Abbott brothers. This revival has reignited interest in the band’s catalog and history. It operates without any involvement from Glaze, who remains focused on his own musical projects.
