Ola Englund On Why Zakk Wylde Was A Better Fit For Pantera Than Him

Swedish guitarist and Youtuber Ola Englund recently chatted about Pantera’s celebration tour and the tribute with Guitar World.

Though Englund received numerous suggestions from many people that he would be a good fit for playing guitar in the Pantera tribute, the guitarist had a more reasonable name in mind than himself. He said:

“I’m extremely flattered by that, but no! It has to be Zakk [Wylde]. He’s the guy. He’s the rock star. There are plenty of guys who can play Dimebag guitar on YouTube, but they’re not rock stars; they can’t handle those shoes. Zakk can.”

He stated why he didn’t want to be a part of it:

“Also, I want to see the band – I don’t want to be up there! I want to be in the pit listening to that stuff being played live again; 15-year-old Ola has been longing for this. I can’t wait!”

The guitarist got to chat with Zakk Wylde in one of his Youtube videos about Pantera. Englund asked Wylde about his first reaction when he was asked to join the Pantera tribute, to which Wylde replied with:

“There’s always been talks about it for years. Especially when Vinnie was still alive, so… You know, I was just like… I’ll just wait ’till that day comes. You know what I mean? If you decide you wanna do it, you know I’m always gonna be here for you. Phil called me up. And then one night, he was just like, ‘Zakk, I was talking with Rex, we’re thinking about doing it, we were wondering if you wanted to honor Dime.’ I was like, ‘Of course, man.’ How could I have said no?”

It’s been nearly two decades since Pantera’s breakup, but the band has again hit the road with the surviving members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown, along with Charlie Benante of Anthrax and Zakk Wylde. They kicked off their tour in Osaka, Japan, in May and will wrap it up before joining Metallica for a North American tour in 2023 and 2024.
