‘Nobody Can Ever Do What Jeff Beck Did,’ Skid Row’s Scotti Hill Explains

For most guitarists, including Skid Row’s Scotti Hill, there tend to be others who came up before them and shaped their sound and playing style. Hill recently sat down with Guitar World to share his top ten guitarists of all time, and Jeff Beck took his place as the most influential at number 1.

As a member of Skid Row, Hill has been in the industry with his band jamming with his guitar for over three decades. Just as he has names who shaped him to be the guitarist that he is, Scotti also has become that source of inspiration to upcoming musicians in the industry.

For Hill, Jeff Beck had to have the first spot on his list as he was one of the more unique players he had ever laid eyes upon. He played on his signature Stratocaster and took his playing to another level. In Scotti’s eyes, Beck was the only guitarist that could be compared to icons like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.

Scotti Hill’s words about Jeff Beck:

For me, number one has to be Jeff Beck. You might think it’s because he recently passed, but it’s not. Honestly, I love Jeff Beck for all of the obvious reasons: his style, the way it developed over the years, and how he was able to develop that into something truly special. Jeff was one of the most unique players in history, in my opinion, and that has to count for something.

He started using a pick but wound up using his fingers and did so to perfection. And then he found the Stratocaster and took it to levels nobody had ever taken. Jeff Beck will always be my number one across the board. In my eyes, nobody will ever be able to do what he did, not anyway or anyhow. No one did what Jeff Beck did for the guitar aside from Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. He was one of a kind, man.”

Hill’s approach to his current playing is rooted in the music and the players he loves. He’s not on a mission to do something that has never been done before; instead, he aims to put his best foot forward when playing with his bandmates. His inspirations, especially Jeff Beck, have always been a guiding light throughout his journey.
