According to Nikki Sixx, managers should guide and challenge you, not just be friends or yes men.

In a recent Q&A session, a fan asked the bassist, “Nikki, what do you appreciate about your manager? Has he been with you for so many years, is it friendship or a great job?”

Sixx replied, “Managers are not meant to be your best friends or yes men. They need to manage and guide the creativity with the artist. We have common goals. Long and short term. If you want a manager as a friend he’s probably not holding you to a higher standard.”

“Same with Lawyers. It’s not their job to kiss your a** or make you feel good. Their job is to exceed the expectation. Thats why we’re together over 30 years and still winning,” the rocker noted.

Mötley Crüe hired Allen Kovac as their manager in 1994, and he has been with the band since then. His first goal was to bring back singer Vince Neil at the time. Kovan previously told Billboard, “That took a sober band, and it took a focused band. They were willing to let me do my job, so I went ahead and took them on.”

Kovac has also been the CEO of Eleven Seven Music and co-produced ‘The Dirt’ movie. He has also managed Richard Marx, Luther Vandross, Clint Black, and En Vogue.

“I wasn’t a Mötley Crüe fan,” Kovac also revealed in his Billboard interview. “I don’t look at my taste in music. I look at how to make songs better, artists reach better. I’ve managed every kind of artist from alternative to country.”

He continued, “It doesn’t matter what the genre is. What is the quality of the content, and what is the best way to activate the audience? Those are the only two things I look at.”

Mötley Crüe is returning to Las Vegas for their third residency this spring. The residency, called ‘The Las Vegas Residency,’ will run at Dolby Live at Park MGM with 11 shows from March 28 to April 19.
