Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx responded to fan criticism about his songwriting process in a recent exchange on X (formerly Twitter).
Sixx shared insights about how reading habits have shaped his lyrical approach.
“I think all the years of reading books separated my mind from a standardized lyrical style to more story telling even through stream of consciousness writing while not focusing on hard rhymes a lot,” Sixx explained. “Every writer has their process for getting over the finish line.”
A fan suggested that Sixx should learn from artists like Maynard James Keenan and Adam Duritz. The fan also criticized Sixx’s lyrics for focusing on simpler themes saying, “Calm down Nikki, you write about girls, drugs and blowjobs.” The bassist delivered a concise response.
“Another tool that didn’t look under the hood,” Sixx replied.
The exchange has sparked discussions about songwriting approaches in rock music. It particularly highlights the evolution of Sixx’s creative process through the years.
Sixx has become more transparent about his creative journey and personal development. A feature in The Creative Independent revealed his views on sobriety in the creative process. The bassist credited his sobriety for enabling deeper emotional expression in his work.
His storytelling abilities shine through various projects. His autobiographical work “The Heroin Diaries,” documented by Goodreads, showcases his skill in transforming personal struggles into powerful narratives.
Metal Wani noted that Sixx continues his work with Mötley Crüe. The musician has also expanded into diverse creative ventures, demonstrating his growth as both a musician and writer.
The bassist’s defense of his writing style aligns with his artistic philosophy. He prioritizes authentic expression over meeting external expectations or comparisons.
