New Found Glory’s founding member and guitarist Chad Gilbert made an emotional return to the stage in a wheelchair. Video footage of the band’s recent live show captured the deeply moving moment for both the artist and the audience.
Gilbert was diagnosed in 2021 with a rare adrenal gland cancer called pheochromocytoma. He performed alongside his bandmates for the first time since undergoing emergency brain surgery in February.
During the show, a visibly emotional Gilbert took a moment to address the crowd, expressing heartfelt gratitude to the medical professionals who have supported him throughout his four-year battle with cancer.
“I want to thank all of the nurses and doctors that have kept me alive for the past four years,” Gilbert said during the live show. “I want to be here. My 4-year-old daughter would not have seen me play tonight if it wasn’t for you, so thank you.”
Following the performance, Gilbert reflected further on the significance of the moment, sharing his feelings about returning to the stage with his band.
“I got to play a show in front of my daughter, something I truly never thought I’d get to do again,” he continued. “And my beautiful wife and all the nurses and doctors, my amazing team that have kept me alive through my battle.”
“It was very emotional getting up on stage with my band again to play,” Gilbert added. “So many feelings all at once. Here are some photos from the show. If you were there I hope you had a great time. Love you all.”
The Nashville show carried an added layer of significance. Several of Gilbert’s doctors and nurses were present in the crowd that night, witnessing firsthand the milestone they helped make possible.
Gilbert’s cancer journey has been long and complex. He was originally diagnosed with metastatic pheochromocytoma of the liver in 2021 and underwent surgery to successfully remove the tumor. The disease continued to evolve. Following his emergency brain surgery in February, his diagnosis changed, marking a new and more serious chapter in his ongoing battle.
Pheochromocytoma is a rare tumor of the adrenal gland. It can release hormones capable of causing dangerously high blood pressure and a range of related symptoms. Its metastatic form means the cancer has spread beyond its original site, making treatment significantly more challenging.
Despite the setbacks, Gilbert’s return to the stage stands as a testament to his resilience and the dedication of his medical team. He rolled onto the stage on a scooter in what quickly became one of the most emotionally charged moments in the band’s recent history.
Gilbert’s return marks a significant milestone in his ongoing cancer journey, offering a moment of hope and celebration for fans and loved ones alike.
