Journey guitarist Neal Schon has clarified that he is not retiring, telling X that he remains active and is currently on tour.
A Journey fan had expressed sadness about Schon no longer playing at concerts and wished him well in retirement. The comment appeared to reflect confusion among some fans about the future of the band following the end of Journey’s Final Frontier tour.
The fan wrote: “Sad you’re no longer playing at concerts Neal but wish you a wonderful retirement & hopefully will still see your live music playing on Twitter/X. Peace, love and always rock N’ Roll.”
Schon was direct in his response: “Not retiring. I’m out here on tour now.”
When speaking previously about his future after the Final Frontier tour, Schon had explained his connection to Journey’s legacy and his plans to continue making music.
“Well, you know what? I think that wherever I go, inevitably, I’m taking a big portion of the journey with me, because it’s been my life,” he said. “You know, and I’ve been there. I’m the only one left that’s been on every single, you know, tour date that we’ve ever done and every record that we’ve ever made and recorded every song that we’ve ever done.”
“And so, I mean, it’s kind of like my baby, you know? I’m gonna take it. I’m gonna do something. I don’t know exactly what I’m gonna do, but I see, you know, I really do like the jam aspect because that’s where the band started. And I can see, like, doing a branch of somewhat, like, what we’re doing now, but maybe even take it a bit further, you know, musically.”
Schon’s comments came as the Final Frontier tour drew to a close and some fans had misunderstood the scope of retirements from the band.
The confusion about Schon’s future stems partly from the farewell branding of Journey’s Final Frontier Tour, which began on February 28, 2026 in Hershey, Pennsylvania and is set to conclude on November 28, 2026 in San Francisco, California across 106 shows. Longtime Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain announced in October 2025 that he would leave the band after the tour, stating he would be “saying goodbye to that.” However, Schon has made clear that Cain’s departure does not mean the end of his own involvement with Journey’s music and legacy.
In a press release announcing the tour, Schon said “I carry the Journey torch wherever I go, and that sentiment and spirit will always remain.” He has indicated plans for an offshoot band that will build on Journey’s foundation while offering something new. According to Schon, he wants to “bring something completely fresh that is a new version of what Journey was.”
Schon’s emphasis on continuing his musical work follows the tour announcement and reflects his commitment to keeping the Journey spirit alive beyond the band’s current farewell run.
