Journey guitarist Neal Schon recently addressed claims made by the band’s singer Arnel Pineda regarding his desire to exit the band before their farewell tour. He shared his response on Facebook.

Schon’s statement aimed to clarify the situation and counter speculation about his role in keeping Pineda with the band.

“Over the years, Journey has always been about the music and the fans first,” Schon said. “There’s been some recent press and speculation that doesn’t reflect the full picture. Touring at this level involves many moving parts. Decisions are made collectively with our team, including management, agents, and promoters.”

The guitarist acknowledged the pressures of touring while defending his position on the matter.

“Like any long-running band, there are moments where people feel the pressure differently,” he continued. “I respect that, and I have nothing but appreciation for what everyone brings to the stage. For clarity, no one was ever prevented by me from making their own personal decisions. At the same time, we were all advised by our representatives that there are contractual obligations tied to touring that need to be honored.”

When Journey fans commented on his post, Schon further clarified his stance. He responded to one fan’s concern about performance quality by stating: “Dude, no one’s making him stay. He’s his own man.”

To another fan questioning why he felt the need to explain band business, Schon replied: “Not explaining anything straightening out the narrative. I’ve been seeing where the finger is pointed to me. I didn’t make anybody come on tour.”

The controversy stems from deeper issues within the band that have recently come to light. Recent reports revealed that Arnel Pineda stated he tried to quit Journey twice due to intense personal problems and felt forced to embark on the farewell tour. This revelation has added context to the ongoing tensions between band members and management decisions.

The farewell tour itself has become a source of contractual complexity for the band. Sonic Perspectives reported that the band is contractually obligated to continue the tour due to agreements with AEG. Jonathan Cain previously called it his farewell tour, which Neal Schon is honoring despite internal issues. These contractual obligations appear to be at the heart of the dispute over whether band members can freely choose to leave.

The situation reflects broader chaos within Journey that extends beyond the Pineda controversy. Industry sources indicated that there are ongoing legal disputes between Schon and Jonathan Cain over politics and credit cards. This suggests that the band’s internal dynamics have become increasingly strained. These tensions have created an environment where personal and professional boundaries have become blurred.

Despite the internal conflicts, Schon has maintained his position that he respects individual autonomy within the band. His statement “No One Was Ever Prevented By Me From Making Their Own Personal Decisions” represents his attempt to distance himself from accusations of coercion while acknowledging the complex realities of touring contracts and band obligations. The guitarist’s response suggests he views the situation as a misunderstanding rather than a fundamental disagreement about artistic freedom.
