Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park recently revealed details about the band’s hit, ‘Lost,’ and opened up about the story of the song and reflected on recording it with the late frontman Chester Bennington.
The song was shared as one of the unreleased tracks in the 20th anniversary edition of the band’s album, ‘Meteora.’ During the recent interview with The Project, the rocker shared about the forgotten ‘Meteora’ era track:
“The funny thing about ‘Lost’ is that it was literally lost. We made that song for ‘Meteora,’ and you make many many songs, and you narrow down to 12 and end up being on the album, and it was the 13th song. It was the one that just didn’t make the cut-off, and we kept it off the album because we had a song called ‘Numb,’ and we were like, ‘Yeah, we don’t want two songs in this kind of energy, so we’ll just save ‘Lost’ for later, we just left it on the hard drive.”
When the singer was asked about the first time they recorded the song and whether he sees it differently now regarding the lyrics, he revealed who had written most of the songs:
“I think that it’s tempting to try and create narratives when looking at songs or albums like these. Couple things to remember, when we were writing songs, some of the songs I wrote for him to sing, some of the songs I wrote with him, and some of the lyrics he wrote and we worked on them together, there were very few songs that he wrote all on his own.”
He made it clear that the lyrics and the thoughts going into a song are not always about the person. Shinoda shared what their intention was while writing songs:
“Our job was to get the best and get the most accurate, the most truthful, nucleus of an idea into the song. Sometimes it’s not just about the person either.”
The rocker shared the same story in an earlier interview, implying they couldn’t have ‘two Numbs’ in their album and admitting that he completely had forgotten about the track. Additionally, he recalled the dark side of the lyrics and his late friend in another interview. According to him, Bennington sometimes sat in silence to reflect and amplify the bad thoughts onto the songs.
The reissue of ‘Meteora’ featured six unreleased songs, the first of which was ‘Lost.’ The song gave the fans another chance to hear Bennington’s voice since his passing away.
