Dream Theater bassist John Myung discussed the band’s reunion with drummer Mike Portnoy in a recent interview with A&P-Reacts.

“We were like ‘Well, let’s go back and write an album like we used to,'” Myung said. “In order to do that we need Mike back.”

“Mike was ready to come back,” he continued. “He had a conversation with the few of us and we had a meeting. It made sense.”

“As a band we want to go back to where we were where we felt that we were the strongest,” Myung explained. “That’s when we were at our best. Having him comeback to revisit that chemistry and write the album came together really nicely.”

The reunion represents a significant milestone for Dream Theater since Portnoy’s departure in 2010.

The reunion process gained momentum through Portnoy’s reconciliation with vocalist James LaBrie, as noted in Modern Drummer. This reconciliation helped resolve long-standing tensions between band members.

Dream Theater released their latest studio album ‘Parasomnia’ on February 7, 2025. This release marks their first recording with Portnoy since 2009.

The band’s official website reveals Dream Theater is now touring North America. The tour celebrates both their 40th anniversary and this pivotal reunion.

The decision to reunite with Portnoy reflects Dream Theater’s commitment to recapture their signature sound. This move opens a promising new chapter in the band’s storied career.
