Mike Shinoda recently addressed Brad Delson’s transition away from live performances with Linkin Park. He explained the guitarist’s new behind-the-scenes role in the band. The comments were shared in an interview with Rolling Stone India.

Shinoda discussed how Delson has taken on a more strategic position since stepping back from touring duties. These duties have been handled by Alex Feder.

“One thing that’s really cool is that because he’s not on stage, he got to play almost like a show director kind of role,” Shinoda said. “He’d watch the show from the front of house position or from the audience, and he’d say, ‘Oh, these things work really, really well. Can we do more of that?’ Or ‘These things weren’t ideal.'”

The frontman explained how this new arrangement has benefited the band’s live performances.

“Then we talk out how to smooth out some of the rough edges,” he continued. “That’s been really helpful.”

This shift in Delson’s role reflects a broader evolution in how Linkin Park operates as they continue their journey with new vocalist Emily Armstrong.

Delson’s decision to step back from touring aligns with his long-standing preference for studio work and behind-the-scenes contributions. The Point reported that Delson has not toured since the band’s 2024 relaunch with new singer Emily Armstrong. This marks a significant change in the band’s live lineup.

The guitarist himself has been open about his preference for creative work away from the spotlight. “Over the years I’ve realized I thrive most when I’m actively working with my bandmates behind the scenes––in the studio, collaborating on our new music, and helping build our live show,” Delson explained in previous statements.

This behind-the-scenes approach is not entirely new for Delson. He has historically contributed as a producer on several Linkin Park albums. Oreate AI noted that Delson held down the role of lead guitarist with creativity and flair. He was known for his distinctive guitar riffs that often defined the band’s sound.

Despite stepping away from live performances, Delson remains actively involved in the band’s creative process and strategic decisions. His new role as a “show director” allows him to maintain his influence on Linkin Park’s artistic direction. He can focus on areas where he feels most comfortable and effective.

The band’s adaptation to this new dynamic demonstrates their commitment to evolving while preserving the collaborative spirit that has defined Linkin Park throughout their career. With Alex Feder handling live guitar duties and Delson providing strategic oversight, the band continues to refine their performance approach.
