Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci shared insights about Mike Portnoy’s return and the band’s upcoming 40th-anniversary celebration in a recent interview with Guitar Interactive Magazine.
When asked about Portnoy’s eventual return to Dream Theater, Petrucci reflected on the timing of this reunion.
“You know, it’s hard to say. You know, it’s not something that you really predict or plan or whatever,” Petrucci explained. “It was sort of like everything aligned. The stars aligned, and it was the right time to do it.”
During the discussion about the upcoming tour, Petrucci acknowledged the bittersweet nature of reaching this significant milestone.
“We’re also at the point where, this is it hurts me to say in some ways. And it’s also fun to say 40th anniversary,” he continued. “But no, we’re actually really, really fortunate to have a career that that long.”
“And so this is the 40th anniversary tour. So there’s so many milestones. You know, Mike returning the first record with him in many, many years and then celebrating the 40th anniversary. So it’s been incredible.”
The reunion coincides with several important milestones in Dream Theater’s history.
The band’s official website revealed plans for their new album ‘Parasomnia.’ The release arrived on February 7, 2025. This date aligned with the launch of their U.S. tour.
The 40th-anniversary celebration encompasses an extensive tour schedule. The band performed across North America, with shows planned in Philadelphia, Houston, and Los Angeles.
Information from Dream Theater’s tour page indicated the celebrations will extend beyond North America. The band has scheduled performances across Europe, including shows in Finland and Sweden.
The tour holds dual significance in Dream Theater’s history. It commemorates their 40th anniversary while marking their first recordings with Portnoy in over a decade.
