Mike Portnoy recently discussed his return to Dream Theater and how the band’s internal dynamics have changed since his departure. He shared his thoughts in an interview with 101 WRIF.

When asked about his level of control now compared to before his 2010 departure, Portnoy addressed how the band has evolved during his 13-year absence.

“I wouldn’t say it’s like before. When I left the band in 2010, I was a control freak and oversaw every aspect, every text, every email, every single aspect of the band, whether it be the merchandise, the fan clubs, the set lists. I was very a control freak, very much so. And it’s not like that now,” Portnoy said.

He explained how the band restructured during his absence and his approach to rejoining.

“The years that I was gone, the band kind of redesigned their internal structure and how they work. John Petrucci ended up taking on a lot of responsibilities. He solely produces the albums now, whereas we used to do them together back then. So now coming back to that after 13 years away, I have to be very respectful over, you know, what they had built all the years without me,” he continued.

Portnoy revealed that he and Petrucci had discussions about sharing responsibilities before finalizing his return.

“And I’m not going to come in here and just assume that it’s going to be exactly how it was when I left because it’s not going to be. And John and I had a conversation even before we solidified me coming back. We just laid out the conversation like, you know, he was like, ‘Hey, are you going to be okay not doing this? Are you going to be okay sharing this?’ And we had to kind of lay out all of those dynamics on how we would function internally. And it’s okay,” he said.

The drummer expressed satisfaction with the new arrangement and highlighted areas where he maintains creative input.

“I’m actually happier now this way. I think it’s a better band dynamic. It’s a more true balance now than it was. So, it’s kind of the best of both worlds and there are a lot of areas that were given back to me like writing the set lists and with that comes programming the house music at the show and the intermission and all the kind of stuff that goes into the the way the show is run the the concert presentation. So, luckily that has always been my biggest passion,” Portnoy concluded.

Portnoy’s return to Dream Theater marks the end of a 13-year separation that began with his controversial departure in 2010. Creative differences and his desire to take a break led to his exit from the progressive metal band he co-founded.

Wikipedia reported that Portnoy’s reunion with Dream Theater in 2023 followed years of gradual reconciliation with band members, particularly after reconnecting with John Petrucci and James LaBrie. The path back to the band began when Petrucci invited Portnoy to play on his solo album. This collaboration helped rebuild their relationship and ultimately led to discussions about a full return.

The band’s evolution during Portnoy’s absence was significant. Drumeo noted that Dream Theater continued to release successful albums and tour extensively with replacement drummer Mike Mangini. This period saw the band develop new creative processes and internal structures that Portnoy now acknowledges and respects upon his return.

Looking ahead, Dream Theater’s official website indicated that the band plans to start studio work on their sixteenth album soon. Portnoy will actively participate in its production alongside the restructured band leadership. This upcoming project will mark his first studio album with Dream Theater since 2009’s “Black Clouds & Silver Linings.”

Despite his reduced control compared to his earlier tenure, Portnoy remains deeply involved in the band’s creative process and live performances. He is particularly engaged in areas he’s most passionate about such as setlist creation and concert presentation. His return has been celebrated by longtime fans who have eagerly anticipated seeing the original lineup perform together once again during Dream Theater’s 40th-anniversary celebrations.
